New York Giants, Jason McCourty is breaking up without a deal … for now

The New York Giants met Friday night with defensive veteran and hometown guy Jason McCourty, and face to face would have gone well.

However, despite a positive meeting between the Giants and McCourty, the two broke up without an agreement. The good news? The door remains open to future negotiations and a potential contract somewhere along the way (probably after the 2021 NFL project).

As mentioned earlier, McCoutry, 33, was a member of our Homegrown Legends team in September / November. Here is what I wrote about him at the time:

McCourty and his twin brother, Devin, were born and raised in Rockland County, New York, and attended high school just across the state line at Saint Joseph Regional High in Montvale, New Jersey. Jason, who played corner and was a running back star, was recruited more than Devin, who played safely. Jason was thinking of attending Boston College, but the Eagles did not offer Devin a scholarship. When Rutgers made offers to both Jason and Devin, the brothers hired Scarlet Knights.

Jason recorded 150 tackles in 47 Rutgers games and was drafted in the sixth round by the Tennessee Titans in 2009. He spent eight seasons with the Titans and one with the Cleveland Browns before joining Devin on the New England Patriots. in 2018. Jason has 18 interceptions in 150 games in his NFL regular season career and won Super Bowl LIII with the Pats.

McCoutry received a 55.7 Pro Football Focus season last season, which was the second lowest score of his career. However, this comes after three consecutive seasons, ranking at 74.4 or better.

There is also a certain level of familiarity between head coach Joe Judge and McCoutry, so we’ll see if that will play into future negotiations or a possible deal. The Giants could definitely use another defender, so don’t expect this interest to be silenced.
