New York adds Apple Pay support to all subway stations, bus routes

Apple Pay is now accepted by the MTA at all stations and on all buses in the five neighborhoods of New York.

More than 18 months after first trying Apple Pay on certain subway stations, the New York MTA has completed its launch on all lines, stations and neighborhoods. The Metropolitan Transport Authority has installed its One Metro New York (OMNY) system on its entire network, for most users.

Although Apple Pay and other contactless options are now supported throughout the network, their use is limited to individual walks. It is not yet possible to pay in advance for an equivalent of the unlimited MetroCard subscription.

“OMNY is available at all subway stations and on all buses, allowing you to reach and travel to New York,” the MTA said in a statement. “You can use OMNY with your own contactless card or smart device. OMNY is currently accepting a full fare option, payment per trip, for now, including free transfers. ”

In a press conference, transmitted on Twitter, The MTA called this “the first phase of the launch of OMNY”. The plan is to completely replace MetroCard in 2023.

The MTA accepts Apple Pay, in particular, at the selected stations from the end of May 2019. In January 2020, there were reports of additional charges, as turnstiles triggered Apple Pay Express Transit even if a user had switched to a regular MetroCard.
