New Tennessee Laws Going Into 2021

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WVLT / WTVF) – Things are changing in Tennessee as the New Year has arrived. These new laws are effective from January 1, 2021:

  • Anyone purchasing cigarettes, vape products or other tobacco products must be at least 21 years old. The law previously allowed anyone 18 to buy tobacco.
  • Changes to the AMBER Alert system will take effect. With the new system, AMBER Alerts can be issued for persons aged 21 and under. The AMBER Alert system was previously only used for people 18 years and younger.
  • The rights have been extended for pregnant women in the workplace. The Fairness of Pregnant Women Act allows women to request more accommodation at work.
  • New legislation goes into effect allowing 911 operators statewide to provide CPR instructions to callers in the event of an emergency. Before January 1, not all counties allowed 911 operators to provide CPR instructions to callers.

The General Assembly will reconvene on Jan. 12 with a special session on education a week later, according to WTVF.
