Pan remains at large, and New Haven police are expected to provide additional information on the case Monday, Captain Anthony Duff, a spokesman for the department, confirmed to CNN.
Pan came into contact with North Haven police “shortly after” the murder, New Haven Police Chief Otoniel Reyes said at a press conference on Wednesday, adding that “extreme caution is required if you come into contact with this person” and that the the public should see Pan as ‘armed and dangerous’.
Jiang, a second-year master’s student at the Yale School of the Environment, was murdered about a mile from Yale’s main campus. New Haven police responded to reports of multiple gunshots and one person being shot shortly after 8:30 PM. Witnesses had “watched a shiny new black vehicle flee the scene,” said a Yale police press release.
New Haven police did not comment on whether a motive could be established, whether the two knew each other, and whether it was definitely Pan who had been involved in a car accident with Jiang that preceded the murder.
There are also two other arrest warrants for Pan: one for stealing a vehicle from Massachusetts and one for owning a stolen vehicle in North Haven, Reyes said. The FBI, along with other federal partners, including the US Marshals, ATF, and DEA, are assisting in the investigation.
