Police arrested a potential bank robber in West San Jose on Saturday morning and called the bomb team to the scene to verify a suspicious device the robber left behind, according to the police department.
At approximately 9:35 a.m., officers responded to the Chase Bank branch of the 1700 block on Saratoga Avenue, near Westgate and El Paseo shopping centers in Saratoga, regarding reports of an ongoing robbery, police said.
Witnesses reported on social media that the robber was armed, but police did not immediately confirm that it was an attempted armed robbery.
One suspect was arrested on the spot and no injuries were reported, police said.
The SJPD bomb team responded on the spot to investigate a suspicious device that the suspect left in the bank, police said. The bank was safely evacuated and the device was later safely converted.
The bank is located in one of the busiest areas of the city, with two large shopping malls and several popular restaurants at the intersection of three main corridors: Saratoga Avenue, Lawrence Expressway and Prospect Road / Campbell Avenue.
