The leader of the Russian opposition, Alexei Navalny, is suing the Russian prison where he is being held because he was detained by the Koran.
Navalny he said in an Instagram post that he bought two to three volumes of the Qur’an with comments, but they were not given to him, because prison officials need three months to check the books for extremism.
He considered it illegal to check the Qur’an for extremism and is now suing the Moscow prison for reading.
Navalny is serving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for what he claims are Russian government charges.
Although Navalny is a Christian, he says that studying the Qur’an is part of his self-improvement and he wants to become “Champion of the Qur’an among Russian non-Muslim politicians” The Associated Press reported.
The trial comes during a decline in Navalny’s health, as he has been on hunger strike for two weeks, as the prison would not allow him to see a doctor for leg and back pain.
The prison is threatening to force feeding Navalny if he does not end the hunger strike, but does not let him see a doctor of his choice.
Navalny begins to lose the feeling in his hands while he was recently diagnosed with spinal hernias.
Several countries have condemned Russia for Navalny prison and sanctioned the country for its actions.
