A man in West Texas was arrested for allegedly forcing a National Guard convoy to evacuate COVID-19 vaccines off the road Tuesday and hold 11 guards at gunpoint, authorities said.
Larry Harris, 66, of Arizona, is accused of chasing three National Guard vans from a gas station, later alleging police did so because he believed there was a kidnapped woman and child in the vans, police said .
After successfully halting the convoy, Harris identified himself as a homicide detective and demanded to search the vehicles, Idalou Police Chief Eric Williams said in a statement.
Harris then ordered guards to get out of their vehicles at gunpoint, authorities said.
Police said Harris spoke irregularly when he was arrested. It was not immediately clear what led him to believe that kidnapping victims were transported in the vans.
Harris is facing several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful restraint of 11 National Guard members, and impersonation.
He was in jail on Tuesday on $ 44,000 bail.
