Twitter users believe that Naomi Osaka, winner of the Australian Open, led Jennifer Brady, a secondary, during the acceptance speech.
Many went to the social media platform to highlight Osaka calling Brady “Jennifer”, despite the fact that he preferred “Jenny”.
The 23-year-old defeated Brady 6-4 6-3 to win the second Australian Open title and the fourth Grand Slam.
At the beginning of her acceptance speech, the Japanese woman turned to Brady and asked, “Do you like being called Jenny or Jennifer?”
The crowd laughed as the second finale said clearly, “Jenny.”
Osaka then said, “First of all, I want to congratulate Jennifer.”
The comment was most likely just a mistake by Osaka as he continued to praise the 25-year-old.
But this is not how it was received on social media.
One Twitter user described Osaka as “rude”, while another thought she was polite because she asked first.
Many, however, found the comments of the champions funny and a harmless example of trolling.
Osaka, who defeated Serena Williams 6-3 6-4 in the semifinals, described her delight in winning another Grand Slam.
She said: “This feels incredible. I didn’t play my last slam with the fans, so having that energy means a lot.
“Thank you for opening your hearts and arms to us. Playing a Grand Slam is a super privilege that I will not take for granted. ”
Brady, who played in her first Grand Slam final, winning the WTA title in August last year, was full of praise for the winner.
“I would like to congratulate Naomi for another Grand Slam title,” she said. “It’s an inspiration for us, what it does for the game is amazing, taking the sport out there.
“I hope young girls follow this and are inspired by what they do.”
Osaka will now watch its original French Open title in May.
She will also aim to win Wimbledon for the first time in June.
