I’m in pretty good health for a 67-year-old man by God’s grace. I enjoyed my golden years in the company of my family, especially my little niece, who had just begun to articulate a few words and still express her commands in a meaningless way. I like to travel and I was waiting to restart once the vaccine was made available to us. Because I am quite good at technology, I started my attempts to reserve a vaccination slot right from March 1st and I got absolutely nowhere. A few speeches on Facebook and WhatsApp groups offered consolation that I was not alone in my frustrations.
Finally, on the evening of March 8, I was delighted to receive a reservation at Manipal Hospital, Whitefield, Bengaluru for the first hour of March 14th. I woke up early, and my son and I arrived at the hospital and were surprised to find only a few people there. Attributing this to Lady Luck, I joined the small group of elderly fellow citizens and their carers only to be informed that there was no vaccination on Sunday. We all, including the hospital staff, checked the meeting messages twice and were disturbed.
After a hectic phone call to the seniors, the staff politely informed the seniors that we could come the next day and we would get priority. In the meantime, at my suggestion, the staff agreed to fill out the registration forms and make the files and be ready while I was there.
I returned, sincerely doubting the assurance given for any priority, and I was convinced that it was only a ploy to disperse. On Monday, he brought a pleasant surprise to the hospital. We were allowed to enter immediately, our files were ready at the counters and as soon as possible we were escorted with all kindness by the staff at the vaccination site. Everyone was so polite and caring. Jabul was practically painless, as was the whole process. The vaccinator informed me that I was being given 0.5 ml of Covishield and then I was taken to the observation room to stay for 30 minutes. Well done Manipal Hospital!
After the jab, I was fine until the evening, when I experienced stiffness at the vaccination site, a slight nausea and a feeling of fever. I didn’t take any medicine and hit the bed early, much to the dismay of my niece’s daughter, who expected me to serve her. I’m better today, except for a slight headache. I urge all citizens to go for vaccination. And the Government and hospitals to carry out vaccinations every day, without any break for Sunday, so that the fight against COVID can be won quickly.
