My COVID story: I developed a sudden weakness and had to move to the bedroom

Delhi-based Nikita Pal gave positive results along with her 5-month-old son and several other family members. The 29-year-old shares COVID’s journey

This year started with an amazing grade, as I became a mother in February, but soon motherhood turned out to be one in which I lived with constant fear of COVID.

On August 16, my father was randomly tested at his office, where he learned that few of his colleagues were positive, but gave negative results in the rapid test that day. However, to be safer, I completed RT PCR and was not very surprised when his report was positive. Ever since he got home, he’s been quarantined in his room and then we’ve all had to wait.

Because his symptoms were mild cough with fever, the doctor advised us to admit him, because he has hypertension and is also in the critical era. Shortly afterwards, we started calling because the whole family was scared and around 22:00, on August 17, the ambulance came and took my father.

That same night, around 12:00, I went to the bathroom and suddenly felt very weak. It became a task for me to return from the toilet to my bed, when I woke up crawling and realized that I had to test myself the next morning. I had a fever, but I pray it was something other than COVID for my son, who was only 5 months old and just breastfeeding. But on August 19, I received my report. I tested positive and my first reaction was a lot of crying, but once it was done, I started a series of tests in our house.

My son who was 5 months old with my grandmother, aunt, 2 sisters and my husband, we all gave positive results the following week and then we started the real fight.

As my whole family gave positive results, three of our members were hospitalized and we all tried to manage the house together with our COVID it was a huge task for us.

On the first day of COVID, I had a very high fever, with bouts of vomiting, and with that I had to be extremely careful in feeding my baby. The next day, I still had a fever, but on this day I had severe headaches that would not go away with painkillers and I was constantly feeling very weak. On the third day, I started to feel a little better with the fever, but my son had mild symptoms such as coughing and then, on the same night, I started to feel short of breath, but the doctors told us, as long as your saturation was over 95, you need not worry so soon. I realized this was anxiety because COVID was so unpredictable. I lived every day with fear and the taste and smell disappeared, it made me even more anxious, but on the 6th day everything seemed to get a little better, my son had no symptoms at all and also we all healed ourselves. .

But little did I know that post COVID is also a condition, so after 14 days I felt good, but by one month, I had a severe weakness and found my basic tasks tiring, such as be caring for my baby. But it took almost a month and a half for our family to recover and become negative, and Grandma and Bua have spent about 25 days in the hospital since they had pneumonia due to COVID.

So after about a month and a half we were all united under one roof, but thanks to technology we were all connected digitally especially with my chachu and chachi from Mumbai, who constantly supported us.

That being said, all members of my family reacted differently to COVID and it is by far one of the most unpredictable diseases I have ever encountered.
