Speaking during an interview on CNN Newsroom, Mulvaney responded to Trump’s comments on Fox News on Thursday, in which the former commander-in-chief said the rioters were “zero threat.”

“I was surprised to hear the president say that … Obviously there were people who were acting and then there were people who were absolutely not,” Mulvaney said.

“But to come out and say everyone was okay and there was no risk is just – that’s clearly incorrect,” he said. “People died. Other people were seriously injured. To say there was no risk is just wrong.”

Mulvaney went on to say that while following the riot live, there was a “split screen” of violent protesters and those staying within the velvet ropes of the Capitol rotunda. Still, he said that even the peaceful protesters should not have been in the Capitol that day.

“There are videos of people behaving and protesting peacefully. But they shouldn’t have been there. And it is not correct to say there was no risk. I don’t know how to say that when people have been killed, ”he said.

Trump made his comments on Thursday when he talked about the security measures taken around the Capitol since the riot, such as the protective fence.

‘I think it’s a shame – it looks like the world is watching – absolutely, it’s a political maneuver they are doing. It wasn’t any threat from the start, it wasn’t any threat, ”he said.
