(Reuters) -Moderna Inc said on Wednesday that it expected the immunity induced by its COVID-19 vaccine to be protective against coronavirus variants reported in the UK.

The company said it intends to perform tests to confirm the activity of the vaccine against any strain.

Moderna’s comments came amid the British government’s plan to place huge areas of England under the strictest COVID-19 restrictions, as an extremely infectious virus variant is sweeping the country.

The company said it expects its vaccine, which has recently been granted US emergency use, to protect against the UK version based on data so far.

“We have already tested sera from animals and humans vaccinated with the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine against a number of previous variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that emerged from the first outbreak of the pandemic and found that our vaccine remains just as effective . “, Said Modern. The US company said it would conduct additional vaccine tests in the coming weeks to confirm its expectations.
