MLB star Randy Arozarena “showed up” in play with inmates in Mérida, Yucatán

The Cuban, before rejoining the Rays, made time to participate in a private game on Mexican soil

Cuban baseball player Randy Arozarena, star of MLB Tampa Bay Rays, shared a game in his spare time with detainees at the Centro de Readaptación Social (Cereso) in Mérida, Yucatán.

Randy Arozarena was in the Yucatecan lands before traveling to the United States to return to training in the new Major League and took advantage of his stay to go to Cereso to play a meeting with the detainees.

The Cuban, who in the last post-season became the sensation of the rays, guiding them to the second world series, arrived at the place on the day of the meeting and had to pass all health protocols in front of the pandemic experienced by Covid-19 and after that one entered the field with a mask to play.

Arozarena surprised the detainees from Cereso de Mérida because they did not expect to share the diamond of the penitentiary center with the player who stood out in last season’s playoffs due to the 10 rounds at home and the 14 RBIs.

As in the atypical post-season, the slugger shone with a pair of homers, one in the third half and another in the fifth, which immediately attracted the applause of those present.

The game ended with the victory of his ninth and with a great performance from the mound, in the batter’s box and also the theft of the bases.

Arozarena developed in Mexico as a player, was at the Tijuana Bull Academy and it was Toritos who distinguished himself in the field of beating and stealing bases.

His performance caught the eyes of Cardinals St. Louis, who in 2016 signed him to a $ 1.25 million contract at the age of 21 and reached the minor leagues to seek further development.

Randy Arozarena also played in the Mexican Pacific League with Navojoa Mayos, before emigrating to baseball in the United States and it was in 2020 when he now became the monarchs of the American League.

With the latter team, he stood out thanks to the actions he connected with the New York Yankees and also the Houston Astros before settling in the fall classic, which they eventually lost to Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cuban, showing his boots of power, was named the most valuable player in the American league championship.

Currently, the player is already working with his team in the Big Top, but before traveling to the United States was when he had time to play a game at Cereso de Mérida.
