Michigan has the second largest number of cases of COVID variants in the United States

DETROIT – Several variants of COVID-19 virus are spreading in the United States.

There is a growing concern that they are not only more transmissible, but may be able to evade vaccines. So far, two of the most worrying options have been found in Michigan.

According to the CDC, the largest number of case variants were detected in Michigan and Florida. According to MDHHS, the largest numbers of the British variant B117 were found in the more densely populated areas.

More than half of the identified B117 variants come from a outbreak within the Michigan Department of Corrections. This is another reason why Michigan has several cases identified.

The B117 variant was found in 31 counties in Michigan, it is safe to assume that it is widespread in the community. The concern now is that it could be part of the growing number of cases Michigan currently sees.

Other variants are monitored, but so far only one case of the South African variant B1351 has been found in Michigan.

To date, vaccines appear to be effective against variants.
