Migrants passing through Mexico during the national vaccination plan against covid-19, which is already underway, will also be vaccinated according to the age scheme the federal government has implemented, the health authority said on Saturday.
“This population is extremely vulnerable and is fully contemplated in the vaccination strategy,” the director of the Department of Epidemiological Surveillance of Noncommunicable Diseases told a news conference. Gabriela Nucamendi.
He said that a person with a “different” immigration status does not have documents such as a population registration code, but is taken into account and experts from the Ministry of Health are already working on a specific strategy “to attract this population.”

Migration to Mexico has increased since October 2018, when caravans with thousands of Central American migrants began entering the country to reach US although during 2020 the migratory flow decreased due to the covid-19 pandemic.
The official stressed that, although it is a population of migrants “and only pass through the country”, the Mexican government will also consider the same vaccination strategy, ie according to age, to direct them to special modules.
According to the vaccination plan, Mexico began immunizing medical staff in January and hopes to begin vaccinating adults over the age of 60 this month. with which doses of Pfize would be usedr for people from remote communities; Sputnik V for those living in medium-sized communities and CanSino for older adults living in large cities.
This week, the Mexican government began online registration of people over the age of 60, and the official reported that 3.27 million older adults have been registered so far and recalled that the goal is to reaches 14.46 million people in that age range living in the country.
Mexico has contracts for 34.4 million doses of Pfizer, 77.4 million for the British AstraZeneca, 35 million CanSino and 51.5 million on the Covax platform.
In addition, it has negotiated with Russia 24 million doses of Sputnik V formula.
As of Saturday, Mexico has accumulated 1.92 million confirmed infections and a total of 165,786 deaths since the start of the February 28 pandemic in the country.
