Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is positive for Covid-19

The president, who tweeted from his official Twitter account, said his symptoms were mild and he was receiving medical treatment.

“I am sorry to inform you that I have contracted Covid-19. The symptoms are mild, but I am already receiving medical treatment. As always, I am optimistic. We will move forward,” Lopez Obrador wrote.

The president added that he will continue his duties at the Presidential Palace, which include making a planned phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Russian Sputnik V vaccine on Monday.

“I will lead all public affairs at the National Palace. For example, tomorrow I will receive a call from President Vladimir Putin, because, regardless of friendships, there is a possibility that they will send us the Sputnik V vaccine,” Lopez Obrador said on Twitter.

He added that the Secretary of the Interior, Dr. Olga Sanchez Cordero, will represent him during the daily meetings in the morning.

Mexico is one of the 17 countries in the world that has reported over 1 million cases of Covid-19. Recently confirmed deaths and cases have risen steadily across the country since early October, with the recent daily number being one of the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has recorded at least 1,752,347 cases of Covid-19 and 149,084 people have died from the virus in the country.

In the most affected city in Mexico, almost 30 public hospitals say they have reached 100% capacity, and many more are approaching this mark. The mayor of the city, Claudia Sheinbaum, asked the residents not to go out unless absolutely necessary.
In December, Mexico City and Mexico were placed in the “red level”, the highest measure on the country’s stop warning system for Covid-19 restrictions. Stricter measures included closing the inner table, leaving only key sectors such as transport, energy, health and construction open.
Lopez Obrador, who rarely wears a mask, has been widely criticized for treating the pandemic.
Mexico has one of the lowest test rates in any major country in the world, and testing is often expensive and hard to find.
