Meteor showers will peak over Colorado just in time for Earth Day

The stellar people of Colorado enjoy a special treatment in the early hours of the morning of Earth Day 2021, because the annual meteor shower Lyrid reaches its maximum level of activity. The meteor shower will begin to peak during the late evening of Wednesday, April 21, continuing until the early morning, Thursday, April 22 – Earth Day.

Expect to see about 10 to 15 shooting stars creeping into the night sky per hour during the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower. The moon will be 68 percent full tonight, according to the American Meteorological Society, which could impact visibility.

Although persistent trains are often missing, Lyrids can produce extra-bright meteors, also called fireballs. The shower is also famous for its rare outbursts, bringing up to 100 shooting stars that explode in the night sky per hour.

“These rare outbursts are not easy to predict, but they are one of the reasons why the tempting Lyrides are worth checking out,” EarthSky.org writes.

Meteor rain will be active between Friday, April 16 and Friday, April 30, 2021. Visibility will vary depending on the state depending on the moonlight and current weather conditions.

Darken up somewhere, give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust and sit back and enjoy a spectacular star show!
