Meghan Markle and Prince Harry gave their support over the weekend at a storm-ravaged women’s shelter in Texas, following a week of major announcements from the royal couple.
Through their non-profit Archewell Foundation, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex provided assistance to Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, an organization that helps families affected by domestic violence. The Dallas shelter experienced significant flooding amid state power outages.
“The Duke and Duchess told the Genesis team today that their hearts remain in the community, in the families that Genesis serves and among the volunteers and field workers who provide altruistic care and support to those in need,” a Sussexes spokesman said. He shared with HuffPost, adding that the couple was “heartbroken when they saw Texas communities still struggling to access the basic resources we all need – water, heat, food, shelter.”
The Meghan and Harry donation will help the organization with immediate needs, roof damage and additional repairs to a transitional housing unit called Annie’s House.
Jan Langbein, CEO of Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, spoke on Sunday about the involvement of the royal family. “This gift will not only provide for our critical needs,” she said, “it shines an international focus on violence against women and children, informing survivors that they are not alone.”
A few days earlier, Buckingham Palace had confirmed that the Sussex would not return as working kings. In a statement apparently indicated on Friday, the palace said that Queen Elizabeth “wrote in writing confirming that, moving away from the activity of the royal family, it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties arising from a service life. public”.
Meghan and Harry responded to the queen’s statement shortly after with their own statement.
