Medicine, IT and Business Administration, the most successful careers

Training and qualification play a key role in finding a job today. The moment of choosing to study a career is a decisive stage in life, even if it is done at the age of 17 or much later.

The employment of graduates depends on several factors: their employment rates, whether the jobs obtained are in line with the training received and the salaries they obtain. The differences between degrees are important. For example, social security affiliation rates range from 92.1% for medicine to 51% for the visual arts, and doctors’ contribution bases exceed an average of € 34,000, while they do not reach 16,000 for graduates in conservation and restoration of the patrimony, according to the data from the BBVA Foundation. In the fields of education, the data indicate that graduates of health sciences and engineering have a much higher demand, while opportunities for those in the humanities and social sciences are clearly lower, as only 14% and 20% achieve a above average employment rate.

In general, diplomas in technology, health, and business are at the top of the list of studies with the most career prospects, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, which compiles a list of the 100 most sought-after professions each year. the work. The main universities with the highest projection on the labor market are: Programming engineering, first of all, followed by dentistry, healthcare, medicine, mathematics, physiotherapy and marketing. In general, science and technology, as well as health, will also have a higher employment rate in the future.

According to Adecco, in Spain Business administration and management is the career with the most professional opportunities in the country, because 9% of job offers that require university studies refer to this qualification. Computer engineering is in second place, followed by industrial engineering.
However, all of these are very nuanced and other factors need to be considered. As Ferran Mañé, director of Employment Observers at Rovira i Virgili University, explains, it is also a matter of supply and demand. “When you look at a didactic situation regarding the labor market, it depends in part on how many jobs there are for this profile and how many people have developed it,” he explains.

There are highly sought after careers among students, but with low employability

Thus, for example, there are highly sought-after careers among students, but with low employability, where the percentage of graduates exceeds the demand for employment. These include studies related to art and humanities, geography and history, political science or journalism. Average employability levels have a moderate percentage of graduates and an average demand on the labor market. There are some diplomas in the scientific-sanitary field, such as Medicine or Pharmacy and some engineering, such as chemical, naval and oceanic or civil. Finally, the high levels of employability, according to Adecco, are characterized by a high presence in the offer and a low volume of graduates. This group includes most general engineering and, in particular, technological engineering, such as computer engineering and telecommunications engineering.

Another factor that influences careers with the highest demand for work is the social situation. Right now, for example, there are a lot of requests for nurses and more and more profiles related to programming, marketing or creating digital content.

“But studying for a university career continues to be a good investment, because university graduates have very low unemployment rates compared to other profiles, and have better salaries,” says Mañé. “In addition, even if there are profiles with lower professional placement, they can later do another training or a master’s degree, which does not present too many difficulties because they are already used to it and thus have more opportunities to the work. Mañé explains that university graduates have a much greater ability to learn, retrain and adapt than a profile without this training.

The principal also appreciates that a university degree trains students in transversal skills, which are very important when it comes to obtaining and retaining a job, such as teamwork. In this way, even if their career does not have high employment rates, they can get a job in another branch, even if they were not specifically what they studied.

For Mañé, when choosing a career, it is important to do it in a vocational way. Thus, market information must be taken into account, but in the end it is more appropriate to choose what we like. Failure in college is closely related to choosing a career that was not vocational or to having done so influenced by the social or family circle because it had “more output”.
