Massive Russian diamond heads of 242 carats at the auction block

You will need deep pockets to bid for this bling.

A massive 242-carat diamond is heading to the auction block next month in Dubai. The auction starts at over $ 2 million.

Russian state-controlled diamond maker Alrosa, the world’s largest producer of rough diamonds, is offering the jewel at Dubai’s 100th international auction on March 22nd.

The rough crystal diamond is about the same size as a small egg, making it one of the largest stones Alrosa has extracted in this century, the company said.

“Rough diamonds, which can cut a polished diamond larger than 100 carats, are extremely rare in nature. Such gems are offered even less often, “said Evgeny Agureev, Alrosa’s head of sales, in a statement.

The diamond was mined more than a decade ago, but under Russian law, diamonds larger than 50 carats must first be offered to the country’s state deposit.

The auction comes a few months after an “incredibly rare” Russian stone of 14.8 carats violet-pink was put up for auction for over 26 million dollars.

Large diamonds mined in Asia are still pale in size for jewelry being unearthed in Africa.

The largest diamond in the world – a 3,106-carat Cullinan – was found in South Africa in 1905.
