Mario Kart 8 is now the best-selling racing game in US history

Mario Kart 8, which includes the original Wii U and Mario Switch Kart 8 Deluxe of the Nintendo Switch, has become the best-selling racing game in US history. Mat Piscatella of the NPD Group, Mario Kart 8 has finally surpassed Mario Kart Wii, which was released in 2008.

Although we don’t know the exact US sales figures, Mario Kart 8 was originally released on the Wii U in 2014 and sold 8.45 million units globally as of September 30, 2020. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released on Switch in 2017 and, as of December 31, 2020, sold 33.41 million units globally.

Mario Kart Wii, on the other hand, has sold 37.38 million units since September 30, 2020. While both Mario Kart 8 have sold more than Mario Kart Wii at 41.86 million units globally, this is one of the first confirmations that Mario Kart 8 surpassed Mario Kart Wii in the US.

Funny facts: the combined sales of Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Wii of 79.24 million units still do not reach the 82.90 million units of Wii Sports sold since September 30, 2020.
