Well, it was weird!
We’re talking about Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic on CNN’s New Year’s Eve show, host Andy Cohen asked the singer, “When you recorded ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’, did you feel like she was going to live that long? Because it’s one of the songs you listen to and it still sounds like a brand new song. “
“Thank you,” said the Grammy Award winner, “but first of all, I hate to always say that, but as a writer, I wrote that song.”
Cohen quickly added, “I know,” but it was too little, too late, for the diva.
“Yes, but you said I recorded it, so I just had to clarify it for those at home,” said Carey, 50. (Carey and composition partner Walter Afanasieff co-wrote the song, supposedly in just 15 minutes.)
Adding just a little more to the exchange, Carey then asked what the background noise was, forcing Cohen to answer that it was Jennifer Lopez’s performance for the evening.
Carey, whose alleged fight with Lopez dates back to the feeling that Lopez copied “Loverboy” with “I’m Real”, kept a fixed smile on his face.
The situation was approached obliquely in Carey’s recent memoir, which described “a woman animator on [Sony’s] label (which I don’t know), ”a part that refers to her in the famous answer to the interview“ I don’t know her ”to a question about Lopez.
