The former ambassador, along with a former Democratic lawmaker, referred to the relationship the Salvadoran government has maintained with that of Donald Trump and explained how Bukele should improve with the new US administration.
While former United States Ambassador to El Salvador, Mari Carmen Aponte, believed that the closeness between Nayib Bukele’s government and Donald Trump’s government will not affect the relationship of the Central American country’s president when the new Joe Biden’s government is taking over, Bukele said. it must show signs of change in various aspects, such as the fight against corruption, respect for institutions and the rule of law.
“It is a matter of analyzing how Bukele reacts to the things that are important in democracy for the United States and to corruption”, Aponte emphasized this Tuesday during Republic of Channel 33’s morning interview, where he participated via video call with former Maryland State Democratic legislator Ana Sol Gutiérrez.
At the discretion of the former diplomat, “After there are clear accounts between Biden and Bukele’s administration, everything will work, but that will require changes that we have not yet seen in President Bukele’s administration”, such as “Tolerance against corruption, institutional character, giving proper value to the laws, respecting the rule of law as an integral part of the way of governing in El Salvador”.

Former Senator Sol Gutiérrez, for her part, questioned Bukele’s actions by flattering the work of current US President Donald Trump.
“I believe President Bukele approached the wrong hand in admiring so much this strong hand that President Trump gave in an insulting way in everything he did by disrespecting human rights”, he said.
He added that “history has shown us that Biden is someone who respects human rights and that his international policy will be based on that, that the American people have always been a leader and demanded that countries and governments take the path to democratic institutionalization. and that there is much more openness and support for democracy, something that remains to be seen within the Bukele presidency, ”said the former legislator.

That is what the former congressman claimed during her speech “The new government (Biden) has the hand that will lead the Latin American countries and berate them when democracy is not respected”.
Position supported by Aponte when commenting on it “President Biden will be very vigilant and give consistent reports of the lack of tolerance for corruption.”
