MAP: New ideas have won more than half of the 262 mayoralties in El Salvador

With an advantage in 57% of municipalities, Nuevas Ideas has five times more municipalities than its ally GANA, which will govern in 27 municipalities.

Preliminary data from the TSE reveal that the New Ideas party appears as the winner in at least 149 of the 262 municipalities in El Salvador, after the election day on February 28.

According to the minutes processed until 15:00 on March 2, the Cyan party obtained the necessary votes to govern in 57% of the country’s mayors. These are followed by ARENA, which appears as the winner in 35 municipalities; FMLN at 31; WIN in 27 and PCN in 16. The PDC and VAMOS parties won 3 and 1 municipality respectively.

Among the municipalities won by the PDC is Metapán, where a few days before the election a plane threw encapsulated bills for propaganda for GANA candidate Ricardo Polanco.

In the department of San Salvador, Nuevas Ideas is in the lead in 18 out of 19 municipalities. Ayutuxtepeque being the only one that could have been retained by ARENA, since the mayor who requested re-election obtained 7,499 votes, surpassing 5,421 for New Ideas with 91.11% of the minutes processed. In the same department, FMLN lost Mejicanos, where Nuevas Ideas won due to its coalition with the CD.

In the department of La Libertad, Nuevas Ideas seems to have won 16 out of 22 municipalities. The rest are distributed to them: GANA (3), ARENA (2) and PCN (1). The municipalities in which ARENA has the advantage are Antiguo Cuscatlán and Jicalapa; while the municipalities in which GANA has the advantage are Sacacoyo, Huizúcar and Tepecoyo.
