Authorities say Evan Thomas Silva was hit by shrapnel when the cannon exploded. He was the only one to be beaten.

Police said the gun had no projectile and was designed to produce a large flash, smoke and a loud noise. It had been fired several times before the baby shower without a problem.

Police believe the gunpowder loaded into the device caused it to break and spread shrapnel across the area.

Silva was seriously injured and rushed to Hurley Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
