Magic Leap is set to unveil its next augmented reality headset later this year, and CEO Peggy Johnson revealed in an interview with Protocol when the product will go on sale. A limited supply of units will be launched through an early adoption program by the end of 2021, and the company plans to make Magic Leap 2 more widely available in early 2022.
Future headphones will be half the size of the current model and will be 20 percent lighter, Johnson said. Despite these adjustments, Johnson said engineers doubled the field of view in Magic Leap 2. “The surrounding optics are complex, but we have a very talented team of engineers,” she said.
It appears that the company sold only 6,000 units of the Magic Leap One Creator Edition in the first six months it was available. He later turned his attention to the consumer market and businesses.
Johnson, who became CEO in August after the layoffs, confirmed Protocol that her team is “focused on the company to launch Magic Leap 2.” She mentioned that the health sector was particularly convincing for the company. “Augmented reality can transform healthcare more than any other industry, at least in the short term,” Johnson said.
Magic Leap competes with several major augmented reality players, some of which are more consumer-oriented. Facebook, Apple, Pokémon Go developer Niantic and Snap are all working on AR devices. Last month, Microsoft defeated Magic Leap for a $ 21.9 billion 10-year contract reportedly to supply AR technology to the U.S. military.
