Maduro takes control of the National Assembly today

Following the legislative elections that allowed him to regain control of the only independent body in the country, President Nicolás Maduro will have a clear path on Tuesday to consolidate his power even more, while the opposition is forced to attract Venezuelans tired of politics after boycotting the election that virtually wiped them off the stage.

After the December 6 legislative elections, “we can say that the opposition no longer occupies any relevance in the institutions, at least effective, de facto, that the state has in Venezuela,” said Oscar Vallés, political analyst and professor at the Metropolitan University of Caracas. .

Neither the outgoing National Assembly – led by opposition leader Juan Guaidó – promised to continue in office “will have no relevance, no impact, no weight for the average citizen,” Vallés said.
