TAMPA – The Yankees will be without Luke Voit to start the season due to knee surgery, manager Aaron Boone said on Saturday, which means that veteran Jay Bruce will open the year as the first starting base.
Voit, 30, is due to undergo surgery to repair a partially ruptured meniscus in his left knee and will be suspended from baseball activities for at least three weeks.
Boone said Voit was played by injuring his left knee during the camp, but the swelling recently returned and he underwent an MRI examination that showed tears.
“He decided to clean it up,” Boone said. “As for the schedule, he felt it was best to fix it and take care of it for most of the season.”
