Luis Zelaya: “I only want to work for my country for four years”

Tegucigalpa.

Honduras was beaten for several years by corruption, drug trafficking and, in the last year, the pandemic of covid-19 and Hurricanes Eta and Iota. Luis Zelaya, Liberal candidate for Presidency for the Liberal Party, seeks to end corruption and drug trafficking in the country.

As indicated by his movement, he intends to “recover Honduras” from the crisis in which it has been scattered in recent years. pre-candidate, which is running in the internal elections for the second time, intends to help Hondurans through programs to reduce unemployment, improve infrastructure, education, health and other issues of interest to citizens.

What are your governance priorities?

Work. We need to rebuild the jobs lost by the pandemic and work on the basis of a stable and dignified job structure. Health. We need a national vaccination plan that guarantees a return to normalcy as soon as possible, but also an improvement in our public health system in terms of the supply of hospitals and medicines and the creation of regional hospitals.

YOUR PROPOSALS

The “Recover Honduras” movement has a plan that sets out 70 proposals for governing the country. The strategy called “Honduras a country with a future” highlights the strengthening and emergence of different sectors of the country. Guide the republic’s budget to serve the women of Honduras and thus stop being victims of gender-based violence and discrimination. Get your vaccines against covid-19, an educational plan focused on providing mobile devices to students so that they can learn in virtual ways.

Education. We will undertake a major educational reform aimed at employment. Education is the key to the future and we need to guide it there. Institutionality. There must be respect for the rule of law, the Constitution and the role Honduras in the region and in the world.

CONNECTING government with drug trafficking means that Honduras’ international reputation has been kept to a minimum and that it is affecting investment and relations with other neighboring countries. And the fight against corruption and drug trafficking. Honduras must no longer be a narco-state. We will recover Mission to support corruption and impunity in Honduras (Maccih), we will strengthen the National Anticorruption Council and we will repeal the new Criminal Code, which protects more criminals.

Why should Hondurans vote for you?

Because our movement is the right side of the Liberal Party, far from the corruption and connotation of the criminals who govern us. Because we will promote a great national alliance from the unity of the honest and because we have a government plan that meets the needs of the people of Honduras.

How do you define these choices?

As the most important in our recent history. We are not only fighting against a situation of economic crisis due to the pandemic, but against a regime that intends to perpetuate itself in power with links or collaboration with drug trafficking. The future of the country depends on what happens in the March 14 elections.

Do you consider yourself right, left or center? Why?

The Liberal Party is considered to be the center. And I consider myself a center, I agree with the ideas of the party’s social-liberalism, that’s why I’m liberal. We believe in the role of the state as a guarantor of basic public services and we promote private activity as a generator of jobs and wealth.

On what criteria was the selection of nominees, candidates for mayors and deputies based?

Candidates for mayors and deputies were selected by the departmental coordinators of our movement. Selection on the analysis of their personal and professional actions, so as not to be linked to corruption. The nominees were selected by me in search of profiles that meet the needs of the country according to their profiles: an economist, a doctor and a person dedicated to our ethnic groups and culture.

Given the population’s distrust and discredit of the political class, why should people trust you?

Because we are not all the same. I understand the discredit of politics and politicians, but we are not all the same. I just want to work for my country for four years, create stable jobs for people and end the corruption and drug trafficking that are in the pillars of the state.

What would you tell undecided or unplanned young people to choose you?

That our government will be the government of employment. Through our policies there will be a future for him and we will put an end to caravans. That we will reform education to guide it to employment, we will have decent health and we will see Honduras again in the international sphere as what it is, an excellent country, not because of corruption or drug trafficking.

In the face of the crisis, how do you intend to recover the Honduran economy?

Attracting investment. First, with local investors. We want to support entrepreneurs and self-employment, we will gradually reduce taxes so that entrepreneurs can invest more and generate more jobs. Secondly, with a public investment plan aimed at improving infrastructure, such as bridges and roads, to facilitate the arrival of international investors. And Honduras’ openness to the world to make our raw material, talent and land attractive to the world.

Geopolitically, where will your government target?

Honduras must be a country open to the world. Today, globalization allows for no limits or boundaries. Our economy, our products and our natural and tourist wealth have no borders; but we cannot turn our backs on what is closest and closest. We need to have a smooth relationship with the countries in the region and, of course, with our main trading partner, the United States. We cannot afford not to have fluid relations with a country where a million Hondurans live.
