Luis Marrero Díaz, one of the agents killed last Monday in the middle of a persecution in Carolina, was posthumously promoted to sergeant on Friday by police commissioner Antonio López Figueroa.
The promotion of Marrero Díaz, who served for 18 years in the Puerto Rican police, took place in the parking lot of the Díaz funeral home in Toa Alta, where dozens of people paid tribute yesterday.
Public Security Secretary Alexis Torres and some of his co-workers and family attended the ceremony.
“For the family of comrade Marrero Díaz, there are few words I can offer to soothe their pain. But If I can tell you one thing with certainty and conviction, it is that in the face of the loss of your loved one, you have gained a huge family. Because behind you there is a whole people that supports you. All Puerto Rican police officers are joining these massive demonstrations of solidarity. Know that each of us is and will always be part of your family“, López Figueroa expressed a few moments before the beginning of the official documents.
The tactical operations division of the metropolitan area, led by Sergeant Miguel Álvarez, fired several rescues as an act of honor to Marrero Díaz. In addition, officers José Castro Fragoso and Eddie Irizarry of the Puerto Rico Police Force blew their trumpets.
“With the power conferred on me by Law 20 of the Department of Public Security and the Government of Puerto Rico, as Commissioner of the Puerto Rico Police Bureau, I am promoted to the rank of Sergeant by Luis A. Marrero Diaz, Plaque 8 -28835. Honor to which honor is due “, López Figueroa said when he promoted Sergeant Marrero Díaz.
Marrero Díaz’s mother, María Luisa Díaz Rivera and her daughter, Jheylimar Marrero Román, received the flags of Puerto Rico and the United States as part of the ceremony.
The closing of the activity was the responsibility of the Carolina Motorized Unit, which performed the lighting of the sirens in honor of the agent who worked in that unit.
Marrero Díaz also stood out as a motorcyclist in the Isla Verde tourist area and as a player in the Pelota Doble A and Coliceba leagues in several cities.
Police on Wednesday confirmed that Carolina municipal police officers Luis Salamán Conde and Eliezer Hernández Cartagena died after a man identified as David E. Rivera Batiz shot them in the middle of an investigation.
The body of the murderer was found in the early hours of Tuesday, with several gunshot wounds in Santurce. He was accompanied by a sign that identified him as the perpetrator.
