LTPO displays that support 120Hz refresh rates, rumored again for iPhone 13 Pro models

The two state-of-the-art “iPhone 13 Pro” models coming in 2021 are expected to use LTPO display technology to enable 120Hz refresh rates, according to display analyst Ross Young.

Young reaffirmed the details in a tweet that he heard rumors about a single LTPO model, which he says is inaccurate.

LTPO OLED displays have a more efficient backplane in terms of power consumption, able to turn individual pixels on and off the screen, better preserving battery life. Young previously said that LTPO technology is related to 120Hz refresh rates and will have to be implemented before ProMotion can be brought to the iPhone, otherwise the 120Hz refresh rate would lose too much battery life.

At the moment, several rumors have confirmed both the LTPO technology and the 120Hz refresh rates for the two Pro-level iPhone 13 models. The 120M ProMotion screens were also rumored for the iPhone 12 models, but Apple did not implement them and instead saved the function for the “iPhone 13” range.

Samsung will supply most of the OTP LTPO displays to Apple, and Apple will also be able to provide displays from the BOE and LG Display.

Apple has long offered 120Hz refresh rates in the iPad Pro range. As with the iPad, the higher refresh rate on the “iPhone” will make the on-screen motion content finer, clearer, and more responsive to tasks such as reading, gaming, and more.
