Bolton said he has yet to review reports of investigations into the behavior of about three dozen officers on Jan. 6, many of which are still ongoing.
It is the first insight into the basis for one of the ongoing investigations of Capitol Police officers. Lofgren has not identified the officer. Capitol Police have acknowledged the ongoing investigations – including the fact that six officers have been suspended for their specific actions – but have not provided any updates since they began months ago.
Many Democratic lawmakers expressed concern after the January 6 attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump crowd that some of the Capitol Police agents appeared to be waving the crowd or posing with them for selfies. Reality has been more complex. About 138 Capitol Police and DC police officers were attacked on January 6, some sustained serious injuries. One died of apparent strokes hours later and two ended their lives in the days and weeks after the attack.
Footage of the riot sometimes shows ferocious hand-to-hand fights in which outnumbered police officers were attacked and beaten, pepper sprayed and clubbed with poles, batons and even a hockey stick and skateboard. Inside the building, rioters often confronted the police, and in other cases the police were reduced to bystanders as the crowd patrolled the halls of Capitol. Outside the chambers of the House and Senate, however, it was a different story, as police beat back ferocious crowds trying to break through the chambers where lawmakers were being evacuated.
