LG begins launching AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to smart TVs in 2018

LG has begun launching a software update that includes support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit for certain 2018 smart TV models, according to several MacRumors readers, fulfilling a promise made by the company earlier this year.

AirPlay 2 allows users to stream videos, music, podcasts, and more directly from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a compatible LG smart TV without the need for Apple TV. HomeKit allows users to control the power, volume and more of the TV using the Home or Siri application. These features are also available on some Samsung, Sony and Vizio smart TVs.

LG initially said that AirPlay 2 and HomeKit will be limited to its 2019 and newer TV models, as it could not “guarantee” a “perfect user experience” on older models, resulting in tens of thousands of people requesting the company to reconsider.

Earlier this year, LG also made the Apple TV app available on some 2018 smart TVs.
