The king of OLED TVs is finally getting on that mini-LED train. LG last night has announced that it intends to introduce its first “QNED” TV at CES 2021.
While LG calls it QNED, these state-of-the-art LCD TVs will have mini-LED technology. If you are not familiar with mini LED, are basically small small LEDs, which are about one-fifth the size of current LEDs. This means you can get more accurate backlighting, as well as better contrast and brightness, for less than OLED. In accordance with Verge, LG calls its mini-LED version “QNED” because the TVs combine both the color of quantum dots (Q), its proprietary NanoCell technology (N), and LEDs (ED). Just don’t confuse it with QLED and OLED.
LG’s QNED 2021 line will include 10 4K and 8K TVs, the largest measuring 86 inches. If you want to keep going into the numbers, the TVs will have 30,000 tiny LEDs for a claimed contrast ratio of 1,000,000: 1 and up to 2,5000 dimming areas. Like LG’s other flagship TVs, these babies will have a 120Hz refresh rate. TL; DR – these QNED TVs should have excellent contrast, HDR image quality and better color accuracy than a typical LED TV.
If you want to compare, TCL also uses mini-LEDs Series 8 TVs, which have 25,000 LEDs and 1,000 zones, and Cheaper 6 Series, which has approx 1,000 LEDs and 240 areas. Samsung is also rumored to launch its first mini-LED TVs in the first half of 2021. The wave of mini-LED displays is not limited to TVs either. MSI launch a mini LED laptop this year, while rumors say that Apple can adopt mini-LED since 2021 in six gadgets.

As with most CES ads, we don’t know exactly how much these LG QNED TVs will cost. That being said, they will definitely be cheaper than the company’s OLED TVs. At the very least, we’ll be able to watch the 8-inch 86-inch LG QNED starting Jan. 11 at the LG virtual booth at CES 2021. Although it probably won’t look as pretty through our damn webcams.
