Former President Leonel Fernández said today that the plenary session of the Central Electoral Council (JCE) took an “unfair, irregular and unconstitutional” decision in issuing Regulation 01-2021 on the distribution of the state’s resource economy, which states that only the modern revolutionary parties (PRM) and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) are considered the majority.
“We believe that the People’s Force was affected not only by that unjust and irregular decision taken by the Central Electoral Council, but that 23 parties in the Dominican Republic were affected. We do not ask for favors, we do not ask for privileges and we do not accept anything that does not correspond to us, but we will look for and insist on correcting the error that was committed “, Fernández said.
The leader of the People’s Force said that he will submit an appeal to the Central Electoral Council and that they will continue to appeal in other cases, if necessary.
“If the People’s Force obtained 5% or more at the presidential level, it does not matter that they did not obtain it at the congressional level, because the criterion must be what favors the right holder the most. Therefore, we consider the decision of the JCE to be unfair, irregular and inconsistent with what it sets out, “the former president added.
The decision was taken after a plenary session of the institution, chaired by its president, Román Jáquez Liranzo, which took place yesterday and lasted more than five hours.
According to Law 33-18 on political parties, groups and movements, 80% of the resources allocated by the state to be distributed among political parties will be redistributed equally between PRM and PLD, as they were the only ones that exceeded 5 % of valid votes cast in elections.
According to this resolution, the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) party reached only 4.54, and the Dominican revolutionary parties (PRD), 3.57%; Christian Social Reformist (PRSC), 2.96%; Alianza País (Alpaís), 1.37%, and Dominicanos por el Cambio (DXC), 1.04%, so that they will receive in equal parts 12% of the allocated resources, remaining as minority parties.
The remaining 8% of the resources will be distributed among the 19 parties registered in the JCE, which received less than 1% of the valid votes cast in those last two elections.
Fernández, who made the remarks during an swearing-in ceremony, said it was another achievement that the People’s Force had risen from box number 17 to box number 3 on the ballot.
“Elections are not won with resources, they are won with the support of the people … We are not just the party of the next elections, but we are the party of the next generations,” he exclaimed.
