SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Law enforcement officials are investigating escalating death threats and violence against California Governor Gavin Newsom, his family, and the wineries, stores and other businesses he founded.
Voicemail and emails provided to the Sacramento Bee contained explicit offensive language about Newsom, violent sexual threats against his wife, and a reference to his children. The newspaper said a report included a threat to set fire to one of PlumpJack Group’s wineries, the restaurant company Newsom, founded in 1992, with regular customers.
Brian Ferguson, a spokesperson for Newsom’s Office of Emergency Services, said he could not answer specific questions about the threats, but confirmed that law enforcement agencies are investigating.
“We can confirm that we are aware of these threats,” Ferguson wrote in a statement. “All threats against elected officials, including public or private property, are taken seriously and closely monitored by appropriate local, state or federal law enforcement.”
The Democratic Governor is the subject of a recall from political enemies who were angry about his aggressive handling of the coronavirus outbreak. Newsom received widespread praise when it issued its first national housing contract last spring, but there is growing public unrest over subsequent health orders closing schools and businesses, and investigations continue into a widespread fraud scandal over unemployment benefits.
False rumors are circulating online that Newsom has given its own companies money for the corona virus. In fact, PlumpJack Group received about $ 2.8 million in loans through the Paycheck Protection Program administered by the federal government, not California.
Newsom placed all of its companies in blind faith when it took office to mitigate potential conflicts of interest. The trust legally prohibits him from being involved in the day-to-day operations of the business or from participating in buying and selling decisions.
