GUANGZHOU, China – Chinese smartphone maker Oppo launched a new flagship device on Thursday as it appears to be heading to the next-generation market to challenge global giants such as Apple and Samsung.

Find X3 will be sold in China, while Find X3 Pro will be launched in international markets, while Oppo is trying to expand its global footprint.

Oppo, owned by BBK Electronics, made its name by selling low-cost smartphones with attractive features. This helped it become the fourth largest smartphone in the world in the fourth quarter. In January, Oppo became China’s first smartphone supplier for the first time, according to Counterpoint Research.

The Chinese company managed to capture the demand for 5G devices in China with its low-cost A and Reno series brands. He took advantage of Huawei’s smartphone problems as a result of US sanctions on the company.

Oppo now hopes that Find X3 Pro will give Chinese telecommunications a way to increase its market share abroad and take on appreciations such as Xiaomi, Apple and Samsung.

Oppo also talked about features for a good mobile gaming experience, which is a key point for today’s smartphone makers.

The phone will start shipping in Western Europe starting March 30th.

International momentum

Oppo’s international momentum has been going on for years since its first launch abroad in Thailand in 2009, followed by India in 2014. The focus has been on countries where Oppo’s low-priced phones would thrive.

But the expansion has grown more recently with the launch of Oppo in Europe in 2018 and deals with major mobile distribution networks, a critical part of growth for smartphone makers in many markets.

Along with Android rivals such as Xiaomi, Samsung and Vivo, Oppo will seek to take advantage of the battles that Huawei has had abroad.

In 2019, Huawei was blacklisted from the US, known as the Entity List, which restricted US companies from exporting technology to the Chinese company. One of the biggest impacts was that Huawei was discontinued from using Google’s Android operating system. That’s not a big deal in China, where Google services like Gmail and search are blocked. But abroad, consumers are accustomed to Android.

The increase in OPPO can be attributed to the fact that it benefited from a large gap left by Huawei. And OPPO seized this opportunity.

And last year, Washington moved to cut Huawei off the chips needed for its smartphones. These two actions affected Huawei’s sales. The Chinese company’s fourth-quarter global smartphone shipments fell 41 percent year-on-year, according to Counterpoint Research. In Europe, it fell by 62%.

“OPPO’s growth can be attributed to the fact that it benefited from a large gap left by Huawei. And OPPO took advantage of this opportunity,” said Neil Shah, research director at Counterpoint Research.

“With the X3 Pro, OPPO will track tens of millions of Huawei users in the Mate and P series in China, as well as globally,” he said, referring to Huawei’s flagship smartphone range. The X3 Pro will compete directly with these devices.

But in more mature markets like Europe, Oppo will have to build a “state-of-the-art image” like Apple and Samsung, according to Will Wong, research manager at International Data Corporation, which could be a challenge for Oppo.

“Oppo needs to target those higher-income consumers who like to have those cutting-edge products. The launch of the Find X3 series is important to build that high-quality image,” Wong said.
