La Jornada – Alcocer Varela calls for a more humanistic medicine

Mexico City. At the inauguration of 158 of the National Academy of Medicine, the Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer Varela, stressed that in 2021 there will be the opportunity to claim the work of the doctor, to move towards a more humanistic medicine, “with a program focused on the real needs of the population. in the times of Covid-19 ”.

He recalled that in 2020 the secretariat announced the rescue of humanistic medicine and to achieve this, it is necessary to transform the national health system in accordance with the principle of social justice.

He pointed out that for this “it is important to take into account that research illuminated by medical ethics with a presence in the field from the first level of care is the basis for the development of a strong and solid health system doctors employed in their country ”.

In the opening ceremony, which was also attended by the Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Enrique Graue Wiechers, Secretary Alcocer Varela mentioned that, even when difficult times pass due to the global pandemic and especially in Mexico, “We are clearer than ever to make the human right to health protection a reality. For our country, this means ensuring access to almost 70 million Mexican men and women who do not have a social security mechanism. “

He added that “there is no doubt that Mexico will emerge stronger from the epidemic with a better health system, in a few months we have transformed more than 900 hospitals to treat patients with Covid-19 and we provide them with supplies and staff. Health for Operation. “

For his part, José Halabe Cherem, president of the National Academy of Medicine, said that this institution will give a voice to academics to make their knowledge visible. “To this end, we will form committees for each specialized group so that, as experts, they can raise the possible problems and solutions they face in their respective fields.”

In this way, we continue, we intend to be inclusive and take advantage of the talent in favor of Mexican medicine. He announced that in the coming weeks, several groups of academics will be convened throughout the Republic to form these committees to discuss and make proposals to change health policies.

He added that distance education will also be strengthened, the updating of the Covid-19 pandemic will continue and, in relation to the annual awards, a new one will be added to recognize the merits of health science education.

For his part, Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez, Mexican ambassador to the UN, who addressed the conference “Pandemic and its consequences”, stressed the opportunity that medicine currently has, which consists in the fact that health has reappeared as a supreme value, of the greatest importance. Today, health is considered by many people, along with justice and equality.

He explained that “as long as it wants to continue to take on the role of rector of health sciences, medicine must also be reviewed, updated and prepared to meet those that may be the biggest, most complex challenges in its history.
