Schwarber adds strength to the group around Juan Soto, whom the Nationals have now approached twice this season, with the addition of Josh Bell through trade at the end of December.
Schwarber has not been bid by the Cubs this season after six seasons with the club.
With teams in the National League working under the assumption that there will be no universally designated hitter this year, Schwarber will play his normal left field position. This probably means that Soto will play on the right field – his position in all minors. Soto played the left field at the start, because Bryce Harper was the right player of the team and remained in position when Harper left for the Phillies. Manager Dave Martinez started Soto on the right field for the first time in the Majors in the last six games of the 2020 regular season.
Schwarber has -29 outs above average in the left field in 2017, the second least occupied in the position behind Matt Kemp (-32).
