Apple’s next mixed-reality headphones will contain a total of 15 optical camera modules, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said tonight in a research note obtained by MacRumors.
Eight of the 15 camera modules will be used for augmented reality experiments, six modules will be used for “innovative biometrics” and one camera module will be used for environmental detection. Largan will provide many of the 15 camera lenses.
Kuo’s prediction of the expected number of cameras in the mixed-reality headset comes from a report yesterday that shared more details about the device, which Kuo believes will be released in 2022.
The headset will be “portable” with computing power and independent storage, but not “mobile” like an iPhone. Current prototypes weigh between 200 and 300 grams, but the final weight can be reduced to 100 to 200 grams if Apple could solve technical problems.
Kuo believes the Apple mixed reality headset will be significantly lighter than many VR devices on the market and will provide a “captivating experience that is significantly better than existing VR products.” Kuo expects the headset to be priced at about $ 1,000 and will feature state-of-the-art micro-OLED displays.
