Keys to start the year with well-being and good spirits

Traditionally, every year that arrives is synonymous with renewal and new opportunities for millions of people around the world. People take the opportunity to make a clean list, to define projects and to reorganize their lives for the next 365 days.

For Camilo Arbeláez, a psychologist and CEO of Enterapia.co, a Colombian online psychotherapy platform, achieving goals has a huge impact on people’s self-esteem, because when a person does something to improve their lifestyle, they have a strong show of self-love and generating stable feelings of security over time.

However, what can Colombians do to achieve these goals and not die trying? Arbeláez makes the following recommendations:

  • Write your commitments in a place where we can easily track them. That is, on the mobile phone or in a diary that we constantly review.
  • Analyze each commitment in detail to determine if they are feasible. It is essential to determine that compliance depends on oneself and not on others or external circumstances.
  • Make commitments to what we want to see about us next year. For example: I want to take more care of my health next year. So there should be commitments to working on a better diet or maintaining physical activity.
  • Determine what specific activities are involved in fulfilling each commitment. What happens to us every year is that we define our general commitments, without clear activities to achieve them.
  • Define a time for each activity related to each of the established commitments. For example: “I jog every day from 7:00 to 7:45.”
  • Write down the positive consequences or benefits that would be gained by fulfilling each of the goals.

  • Make a maximum of 5 general commitments, because sometimes many goals can become unattainable goals.
  • It is ideal to have commitments in all areas of life: personal, family, couple, social, academic, professional, etc. Sometimes we focus on one area and this could be unbalanced for the functioning of our lives.
  • Determine your own incentives to meet each of your commitments. For example: if I can finish my finance course, I will go to my favorite restaurant and order the dish I like the most.
  • Get other people involved in your commitments. Encouraging and recognizing those around us can generate additional motivation.

“When people do not achieve their goals, it is natural to feel frustrated. The meaning of life is affected if something is desired with great desire and is not achieved, knowing that it depended exclusively on ourselves “, adds Arbeláez.
