It will feel like Christmas today for the Giants, but especially for Daniel Jones.
Happy Golladay. A great catch for Dave Gettleman and Joe Judge. A big, big target for Danny’s Dimes.
Kenny Golladay’s signing now changes everything for Jones and the Giants. Jones now has more than one fighting chance to enjoy a season of discovery for Fighting Joe Counties … if his young offensive line can protect him … if offensive coordinator Jason Garrett can orchestrate a friendly offense with the defenders. .. and if Golladay, 27, can stay on the field longer than he did last season for the Lions, when a hip flexor tormented him.
If they’re big, yes. But Golladay receiving the medical green light from the Giants doctors is a hip hooray, if there ever was one for Jones and the Giants and immediately filled those on the 1925 Giants Drive and beyond Golladay’s will.
So not only does Jones greet Saquon Barkley back.
He greets a 6 meter capture monster and a deep threat.
Not Catch-22 here. This was a move that had to be made once Leonard Williams took off his robbery and Golladay’s cost dropped to fit into the Giants’ caps space.
It is a type of culture because it is quiet and humble, the anti-diva receiver. And he will block in the race of the game. Jones will have a better chance of being Gettleman’s Eli Manning if Golladay turns out to be Gettleman’s Plaxico Burress.
Think about it: from 2005-08, Eli Manning threw to 6-5 Burress and 6-3 Amani Toomer.
Jones, last season, threw at 5-10 Sterling Shepard, 5-10 Golden Tate and 6-1 Darius Slayton.
Odell Beckham Jr. was an outlier: he could take a tilt home and make catches with one hand at 5-11. The last time the Giants made the playoffs, Manning beat Beckham, 6-0, Victor Cruz and Shepard.
The fastest way to improve a young defender’s completion rate is to get him a target with a large capture radius.
This was Tom Coughlin on Burress:
“He is a guy who has an imposing physical presence. And because he has the ability to be a long ball threat, he’s a guy who will force the defense to pay close attention to where he is. He is a great target. He can catch the ball with his hands above his head, which puts him far above most corners and the safest. ”
This was former Lions coach Matt Patricia on Golladay:
“It’s very long, it’s big, for sure – for some of the matches he can enter, it creates an advantage from this point of view. And he’s a physical guy. He can play the big-man game in the receiving position, which is great. And, again, only from the point of view of the catch radius, it offers the defender an important target in the red zone as well. ”
Golladay had a hard time separating, but he has two seasons of 1,000 yards on his CV and 11 TD catches in 2019. Giants corner James Bradberry will tell you about the moment Golladay broke a potential interception from him and ran away with the ball for a first descent.
This was Bill Belichick in 2018 on Golladay: “He is a very explosive player, great hands, he made some fabulous catches in the games we saw this year and last year on the sidelines and on the field. Putting his feet in, running after the catch. ”
Higher is always better for the Gettleman and illustrated an affinity for the big receiver. He drafted 6-5, 245 pounds Kelvin Benjamin in the first round in 2014 and 6-4, 236 pounds Devin Funchess in the second round in 2015 as GM Panthers. Both enjoyed mixed success.
Barkley runs the ball and catches it. Shepard operates out of the slot. Golladay, open even when it’s covered. The smallest NFC will be grabbed again. And this time, Daniel Jones will have someone who can reach out and grab him.
