Kelli Ward rejects request for Arizona GOP race audit

Kelli Ward, president of the Arizona Republican Party, last week turned down requests for an audit of the party’s elections, including for her own race for party chair.

During a radio interview on “The Conservative Circus w / James T. Harris” on Friday, Ward brushed aside criticism of the way the party organized its January 23 elections.

“There’s no procedure, process, or rule by which it can be done,” Ward said. “And you certainly will not allow a challenger who has lost an election to demand something he is not entitled to, and we have no responsibility to provide.”

Ward was under scrutiny this week over allegations of fraud in her election as party chairman.

Sergio Arellano, who narrowly beat Ward for the position by 42 votes, requested an audit of all party elections after Sandra Dowling was falsely named the winner of an overall position for Congressional District 8.

Ward confirmed that the mistake had been made, but also said that Dowling was immediately contacted about the mistake and that the correct winner was announced. She said the only people asking for the audit are people who worked for Arellano’s campaign.

“The only people who asked for an audit – which doesn’t exist in our process, our procedures, our statutes, in the statutes, or in Robert’s Rules – are Sergio and the people working for his campaign,” said Ward.

“We don’t have the structure to do an audit, but we welcome their input to make our elections bigger,” she said.

Ward also accused the media of trying to “ make up something that just doesn’t exist. ”
