Michigan coach Juwan Howard allegedly threatened Maryland coach Mark Turgeon before he was sent off in the second half of Friday’s Big Ten quarterfinals.
Maryland told the conference that Howard told Turgeon, “I will kill you,” InsideMDSports.com reported, citing an unnamed source.
According to the report, no formal complaint has been filed. Howard is not expected to be disciplined, which means he will train in the semifinals against Ohio on Saturday.
The two coaches had to be separated from officials and other staff members after a shouting match broke out between the benches in the second half of Wolverines’ 79-66 victory.
Turgeon told reporters that he had called Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren as a precaution in connection with Michigan playing mockery during two regular-season games.
When it happened again on Friday, when Michigan went on to win, Turgeon said he “wasn’t going to take the third game. And so I defended for my team, I stood up for myself. ”
He was charged with a technical foul, but continued to coach the game, while Howard was sent off after shooting two technical fouls.
An elderly Michigan student, Hunter Dickinson, talked to the garbage on the bench in Maryland during a victory on New Year’s Eve, but the report says Howard was doing this just as well as reducing his players.
“We have incredibly passionate coaches, incredibly passionate players, incredibly passionate fans,” Warren told the Big Ten Network. “As in the case of all these things, our office reviews it from the point of view of sports policy, which we did after the game. And there will be no more action. We believe that the officials managed it properly in court and disseminated the situation “.
Howard seemed to be gesturing to the Maryland bank to turn on the noise, but later said he was trying to talk to officials when Turgeon said, “Juwan, I won’t let you talk to me! You never talk to me again! ”
Afterwards, Howard told reporters, “I was raised by my grandmother and Chicago. When a guy accuses you, you go into defense … When he accused me, I reacted. ”
