Senator of the Democratic People’s Party (PPD), Jose Luis Dalmau Santiago, was elected today as the new President of the Upper House.
Dalmau was elected with the 12 votes of the PPD delegation, as well as with the opinion of the Senator of the Dignity Project Joanne Rodríguez Veve, as well as the independent senator Jose Vargas Vidot.
New Progressive Party (PNP), Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana and Puerto Rico Independence Party (PIP) delegations abstained. There was no vote against.
“He is a leader who has grown up in the most difficult times in our recent history … the best person to take over as president of the Senate is, without a doubt, Jose Luis Dalmau Santiago,” said Rubén Soto Rivera, senator for from Arecibo, when he made the nomination, a motion that was seconded by Pava senator Gretchen Hau.
During his nomination, Soto Rivera also acknowledged “Humility of character, nobility of spirit and extraordinary ability to work in a team” by Dalmau Santiago.

In a previous interview with The new day, Dalmau indicated that he will immediately focus on three areas: health – including COVID-19 -, education and economic development. “There are many families who do not have a way to earn a living, so I think that in the short term, we need to start working on these three points together with the executive,” Dalmau said.
In recent weeks, he added, he has taken on the task of analyzing the government programs of all parties. “We have a diverse Senate and you have to see where there are coincidences”, he pretended.
During the ceremony, Senator Javier Aponte Dalmau was also announced as a PPD spokesman. The substitute spokesman, in turn, fell on Gretchen Hau’s face. For the PNP, these positions will be held by former Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz; and Senator Carmelo Ríos, respectively.
Puerto Rico’s Independence Party (PIP) spokesman will be taken over by its senator, María de Lourdes Santiago. While the delegation of the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC), consisting of Ana Irma Rivera Lassen and Rafael Bernabe, will take over the spokesperson and the substitute spokesperson, respectively.
The activity was attended by Governor Pedro Pierluisi, as well as several leaders of PPD, a community that obtained the largest number of seats in the Upper House. Among them were former governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, President La Pava, Carlos Delgado Altieri and former Senate President Eduardo Bhatia.
Meanwhile, the popular mayors of Caguas, Juncos, Villalba and Yabucoa were also present.
The works were inaugurated – according to the Political Code – by the Secretary of the Senate, Manuel Torres Nieves.
