José Alves “Zague”, the American legend, dies

Mexico City- At the age of 86, José Alves, the legendary “Lone Wolf” who made an era with America in the 60’s, died today.

His son, Luis Roberto Alves “Zague”, who inherited this nickname from his father, today reported the death of the Brazilian striker, without specifying the causes.

José was born in Brasilia on August 10, 1934, after playing for Botafogo, Corinthians and Santos, he was brought to Mexico by Emilio Azcárraga Milmo, who had acquired the azulcrema team and was looking to build an extremely competitive team.

With America he won the Mexican Cup in the 63-64 and 64-65 seasons, to later raise the league title to 65-66.

He was also a scoring champion with 20 goals and scored his second goal at the inauguration of the Azteca Stadium.

He only came for two tournaments and ended up playing for 8 years with the azulcrema team.

Through 299 games he scored 86 goals in the league, becoming one of the team’s top scorers.

“A caring man, loving and always willing to help. My father gave his heart to his family and friends in Brazil and Mexico.

“Dear father, I appreciate all the love you have given us. We will always remember you as the great man and the light that guided our ways.

“Thank you for everything Dad, I send you a kiss in the sky. Goodbye Lone Wolf”, was the message sent by “Zaguinho”.
