For some Americans, their only option for the coronavirus vaccine was the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and a withdrawal in the implementation of treatment causes some to lose hope of vaccinations together.
This is the case of 58-year-old Karilynn Buchan of Park Forest, Illinois.
I met her in December 2020, during the filming of documentaries composed of NBC 5 in four parts: “Vaccinated State”.
During interviews for the series, Buchan explained how she was allergic to the ingredients in Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which use mRNA technology and contain polyethylene glycol, known as “PEG”.
The Johnson and Johnson vaccine uses a more traditional approach to activate an immune response and was the only option for Buchan who did not have a high risk of a severe allergic reaction.
Now that the FDA has recommended stopping the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because of concerns about blood clots, which have affected six of the nearly 7 million doses given, Buchan says his heart is broken.
“It simply came to our notice then. I don’t understand “, said Buchan. “I said then that I have confidence in science, which is true. I trust mRNA science. ”
Buchan decided to rethink the administration of the vaccine together, fearing possible side effects.
It’s important to note that scientists say that blood clots are extremely rare, but that won’t change Buchan’s mind.
Buchan has a recently diagnosed heart condition, which makes her “at high risk” for COVID-19.
She was locked up at home for the last year because of these conditions.
Now, the fears of being left behind return as she watches others in her family be inoculated.
When asked if she would get the vaccine if the FDA should regulate the safety of J&J, Buchan initially said “absolutely no.”
She went on to say that she will have to wait to see what happens in the ongoing trials.
