Jared Porter fired Mets GM because of the text scandal

The Mets fired GM Jared Porter on Tuesday morning after a sexting scandal was brought to light.

“I gave up Jared Porter this morning,” the owner said Steve Cohen posted on Twitter. “In my initial press conference, I talked about the importance of integrity and I said it honestly. There should be zero tolerance for this type of behavior. ”

Porter, who was hired by Mets team president Sandy Alderson this season, sent the texts to a foreign reporter in 2016, when he headed the Cubs research department.

The texts included a photograph of a swelling in Porter’s pants as he lay in bed and an erect penis. At one point, Porter sent the reporter 62 consecutive unanswered texts.

“The most explicit are not mine. These are like jokes, “Porter told ESPN after admitting to sending texts.

Alderson and the Mets released a statement Monday night following the ESPN.com report.

“I spoke directly with Jared Porter about the events that took place in 2016, about which we were informed tonight for the first time,” Alderson said in a statement. “Jared acknowledged my serious misconduct, took responsibility for his behavior, expressed remorse and apologized for his actions.

“Mets take these issues seriously, expects professional and ethical behavior from all our employees and certainly does not accept the behavior described. … We will follow up while analyzing the facts regarding this serious issue. ”

Cohen then acted quickly using Twitter to announce the dismissal of the 41-year-old general manager.
