Jacob deGrom beats 14, but the Mets can’t beat Trevor Rogers and the Marlins

NEW YORK – Jacob deGrom matched his best career-high shots in 14 innings, but, as is often the case with the two-time Cy Young Award winner, he received no offensive support while the Miami Marlins closed the New York Mets 3-0 on Saturday.

DeGrom (0-1) looked unbeatable early on, until Jazz ChisholmJr hit a fast ball thrown at 100.4 mph on a 0-2 lead over the attacking zone in the second half. The home shot of the left striker reached the second floor of the right field and was estimated at 402 feet.

It was the first 0-2 maneuver that DeGrom allowed in the major.

That was all Miami could do against DeGrom. The left hit 14 shots for the fourth time in his career, including three against the Marlins. He allowed a run, five shots, went no one and made 76 of the 95 pitches for strikes.

Marlins left-hander Trevor Rogers didn’t make it easy for the Mets, changing 10 of six innings to beat deGrom for the second time in nine major league starts. The 23-year-old won his first major league victory against DeGrom in a 5-3 victory on August 31st.

Rogers, selected in the first round of the 2017 draft, had no major problems against New York, allowing three shots and two walks, retiring 11 in a row in a single step of the game.

Rogers mixed a fast ball averaging 95 mph with a slider and a switch, inducing 19 hits and misses between his 82 shots. He ended his outing with blows to Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso, leaving two backs waiting to be towed to maintain a 1-0 lead.

Dylan Floro followed with a perfect seventh half, Richard Bleier was helped by Miguel Rojas’ sinking catch to steal a shot from Kevin Pillar in the eighth half, which closed perfectly, and Yimi Garcia finished the game. hits, saving Anthony Bass’ work closer.

Meanwhile, New York’s close friend Edwin Diaz relieved deGrom and fought. Starling Marte doubled to lead the half and scored one in Jesús Aguilar’s next bat. Rojas added an RBI single before Diaz was pulled and booed from the mound.

Mets fans also mocked Conforto, who hit three times to extend a series of losses and start what could be his last season in New York. The player on the right will become a free agent in the fall.

DEGROMINANT

DeGrom, 32, looks better than ever in the eighth season of the major league. Not only does it have an average of 99 mph with its fast ball, compared to 94 mph when it debuted in 2014, but it also launches it with more “lift”. The height decreases on average by one centimeter less than in 2020, which makes hitters see that they are moving in the attack area as they approach.

DeGrom eliminated at least 10 beats for the 47th time, beating Dwight Gooden for the second-highest in Mets history, just behind the 60-seater Tom Seaver.

The New York starters had four quality starts in the first five games of the team, but they are 2-3 in the season.
