Jack Campbell makes NHL history with 11 straight wins to start a season as the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to tailor

TORONTO – Auston Matthews scored three times to increase his NHL lead to 31, Jack Campbell made 27 saves to set an NHL record for consecutive wins to start a season, and the Toronto Maple Leafs outscored Ottawa Senators 6-5 on Saturday night.

Campbell became the first goalkeeper with a win in each of his first 11 appearances, while the Maple Leafs, in first place, continued to dominate the rest of the Northern Division.

Mitch Marner added a goal and three assists for Toronto. Maple Leafs have won six consecutive results to improve to 28-10-3 and are 5-2-1 against Ottawa this season.

Matthews had the third hat trick of his career and also assisted on a four-point night. He has five consecutive 30-goal seasons to start his career.

Campbell broke the 10-win mark to start a season set by Carey Price in Montreal in 2016-17. And Ilya Mikheyev and Zach Hyman each had a goal and an assistant. With Saturday’s victory, he moved to two of the team’s leaders, Frederik Andersen, who is 13-8-2. Michael Hutchinson has appeared in eight more games this season on the net for Toronto.

Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson and Connor Brown each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Formenton and Josh Norris also scored for Ottawa.

Anton Forsberg stopped 32 shots for senators. They have lost four in a row and are 1-5-1 in the last seven.

Brown set a franchise record by scoring in a seventh straight game – breaking the tie with Batherson, Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson and Bob Kudelski.
